PPG Packaging Coatings has an opportunity for a Product Development Chemist with the Beer and Beverage Exterior Coatings Team! As a Product Development Chemist, you will be responsible for coating formulation development through hands-on laboratory experimentation that enables commercialization of waterborne coatings. This includes preparation of coating samples, performance testing of all types, problem-solving of new and existing products, and transfer of the product to commercial manufacturing. The role is expected to be able to operate autonomously with only general direction from a group or project leader, but also act efficiently as a team player.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Maintain a safe working environment and follow lab safety protocols by ensuring the safe operation of all equipment and chemical handling necessary, and confirm the proper safety equipment, procedures, and housekeeping are maintained in all areas.
  • Formulating new or improved products, evaluating raw materials and substrates, production scale-up, launches, maintenance of product line, and problem solving manufacturing issues and field concerns through root cause analysis.
  • Design and execute an experimental plan utilizing a variety of routine laboratory operations in a research setting, including blending paint formulas, applying paint to test panels, and performing specification testing.
  • Follow experimental procedures, capture and analyze all data, and record detailed accounts of experimental process and results in a laboratory notebook.
  • Maintain and clearly communicate results through written and verbal summaries, coatings reports, test drill presentations and gate review updates.
  • Share ancillary duties such as equipment maintenance and calibration, ordering raw materials and lab supplies, competitor benchmarking and other testing, and other support duties is included as responsibilities.
  • Work with manager in setting SMART project goals, and successfully fulfill the established project timeline.
  • Develop and evaluate new insights to improve coating performance, meet regulatory requirements, and/or address unmet customer or market needs.
  • Grow and apply fundamental chemical and/or materials science knowledge to accelerate innovation.
  • May be required to utilize or develop new methods, processes, or procedures requiring originality, ingenuity, and resourcefulness.



  • B.S. or M.S. degree in a technical field such as Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Engineering required. PhD or MS degree with 3+ years of relevant experience preferred.
  • 1 - 3 years of experience in a coatings formulation laboratory or plant setting preferred.
  • Strong chemistry, polymer, and materials knowledge.
  • Must have high attention to detail, good dexterity, good organizational and time management skills, good written and verbal communication skills, the ability to multitask, and the ability to analyze data and make sound decisions.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in particular) is required. Strong Excel skills are desired.
  • Formulating experience with waterbased or packaging coatings is a plus.
  • Ability to perform in a team environment and encourage teamwork and information sharing.
  • Is a self-starter, takes responsibility for his/her actions, demonstrates ownership, initiative, and drive.
  • Travel would be less than 10%.
